 CCNA Graduation Report

The University of Asmara graduated its first cohort of the Cisco Certified Network Associate program students on Feb 15, 2003.

For the University and especially for the young Department of Computer Science this is a historic moment that will always be remember because it our first experience of success in contributing to the training of IT skilled Eritreans in the service of their country. The importance of acquiring IT skills in a rapidly globalizing
knowledge based economies require very little emphasis.

It is a great pleasure for the Department of Computer Science to announce of the total 47 students who registered for the course 33 have completed all the
requirements while 8 required to only complete the Threaded Case Study report, 3 who haven't completed the Semester 4 final exam for various technical reasons and 3 has interrupted their studies. The 33 who have fully completed their requirements and the 8 who have yet to submit their reports participated in the graduation
ceremony.

The CNAP is a comprehensive e-learning program that delivers on a rich, interactive web-based content, online assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, instructor training and support and preparation for industry standard Certification.

As can be seen from the above description the Cisco Networking training program is very heavily dependent in the Internet a commodity that today is readily available
throughout the world. Unfortunately the unreliability and slow Internet connectivity in Eritrea is bad so that it has been the major source of the problem and impediment to the smooth operation of the program. With the present system on the Internet service neither the expansion of this program nor the University's overall ambition plans to fully utilize the Internet to initiate post graduate program as well as expand access to higher education through distance education can be realized.

The other constraint in the operation of the program has been the shortage of instructors and teaching resources. Besides the training was dependent on the already overstretched limited resources of the Computer Science Department. This department in addition to being new has the responsibility of catering to very large number of students in the University and sharing very limited resources amongst very large students had been not only very difficult but it has also limited the access of the network to these facilities.

It is encouraging to note that the University is planning to dedicate a fully equipped facility with full two instructors to this program at its Constancy, Testing and Training Center. Besides the University is making arrangements to set its own VSAT solution for a better Internet connectivity.

In spite of all these difficulties the untiring dedication and tenacity of the CCNA
students has enabled them to complete the program successfully

In closing, the CNAP congratulated all the students for their dedicated efforts and for completing against all odds the course successful and wish them the best of luck in their carrier.

Last but not least, the Computer Science Department would like to gratefully acknowledge the financial and moral support from CISCO and UNDP to setup the
Academy. It would have been impossible to run this program with out their support and motivation. The Department of Computer Science would also like to thank the University?s as well as the Ministry?s administration for their full support and commitment towards the  successful completion of the program.
